Materials Needed
Before we begin, let’s gather all the materials we’ll need for this project. Here’s a list of what you’ll need:
- Burlap
- Paint (Krylon paint in brilliant aluminum color)
- Pencil
- Poster board
- Embossing tool or ballpoint pen
- Scissors or exacto knife
- Foam board
- Glue gun
- Rope
- Printed tree images
- Scrap foam board
- Holiday embellishments
Creating the Wall Hanging Sign
Using a Rug as a Template
To create the sign, we’ll start by using a rug from the Dollar Tree as a template. If you prefer, you can print or write your own design. Place a sheet of parchment paper over the image and secure it in place with painter’s tape. Then, use a pencil to lightly trace the design.
Tracing the Design onto Poster Board
Next, take a piece of poster board with the glossy side up and place the template on top. Use an embossing tool or a ballpoint pen to indent the poster board with the design.
Embossing the Design
To make the embossing more visible, go over the design with a pencil. This will make the lines stand out.
Cutting out the Design
Now, flip the design over and use a ruler to mark the length across the top and bottom in 1/2 inch increments. Use the ruler to emboss lines from top to bottom across the entire length of the design. This will ensure that the folds are even and easier to fold once they’re painted. Cut out the individual design pieces using scissors or an exacto knife.
Spray Painting the Design
It’s time to add that galvanized metal look! Spray a few letters at a time with the Krylon paint in brilliant aluminum color. While the paint is still wet, dab the letters with a crumpled-up paper towel. This will create a textured look similar to galvanized metal, adding some extra visual interest to your design.
Cutting and Covering the Foam Board with Burlap
Take a foam board and mark the size that will fit your design. Cut the foam board to the appropriate size. Next, take a double layer of burlap and cover the foam board. Trim the edges so there’s about a 3/4 inch of burlap all the way around the board.
Attaching the Burlap to the Board
Use a glue gun to start folding and attaching the burlap to the board. Run a small bead of glue along the raw edges to prevent fraying.
Cutting Strips from Poster Board
Prepare another piece of poster board in the same way you prepared the home sign. Cut strips from this poster board.
Creating the Corrugated Design
To create the corrugated design, begin fan folding the strips on the embossed lines. Repeat this folding process with the home design as well.
Arranging and Adhering the Design
Now it’s time to arrange your design on the burlap-covered foam board. Flip the pieces over and apply hot glue, then press gently into place. For the letters, apply the glue to the folds that touch the board.
Attaching the Rope for Hanging
To hang the sign, cut a piece of rope about 18 inches long. Measure in from each side of the board about five inches and mark the location with a pencil. Generously apply hot glue and attach the rope to each side. Be sure to cover the ends of the rope with hot glue for added security. Set the sign aside to dry while we move on to creating the standing Christmas trees.
Creating the Standing Christmas Trees
Printing and Cutting the Tree Images
Print out a tree image from the internet and create two different sizes.
Transferring the Images onto Foam Board
Take a scrap piece of foam board and place the poster board with the tree image on top. Trace the image onto the foam board using an embossing tool. This will transfer the ink to the foam board.
Cutting out the Foam Board Shapes
Cut out the foam board shapes, leaving a half-inch allowance around the design.
Cutting Burlap and Applying to the Foam Board
Trace the foam board shape onto a piece of burlap and cut it out. Apply a light layer of hot glue between the two layers of burlap.
Applying the Galvanized Tree Design
Apply a generous amount of hot glue to the foam tree and press the burlap on top. Flip it over and trim off any excess burlap.
Making the Trees Self-Standing
To make the trees self-standing, glue four scrap foam board pieces together and apply them to the back of the tree at the trunk space.
Adding Personalized Touches
Adding Holiday Embellishments
You can add any holiday embellishments to these designs to make them your own. For the home sign, you can pin on a few holiday picks and add some greenery.
Customizing the Wall Art and Decor
These items are super easy and inexpensive to make, and most of the materials can be purchased from the Dollar Tree. You can use burlap, fabric scraps, paper, or even wood to customize the designs to your personal preferences. Get creative and make them unique to your style!
